The use of lithium-ion batteries as part of the propulsion system of aircraft poses hazards that need to be analysed, understood and where necessary mitigated. This requires an evidence base to assess the risks and the development of a regulatory solution to enable lithium-ion batteries to be used appropriately. There are also significant discussions taking place within the rescue and firefighting community regarding how best to deal with lithium-ion battery thermal runaway.

To assist industry and regulator understanding of these risks and hazards, the CAA has commissioned WMG University of Warwick to investigate how battery characteristics can affect thermal runaway risk, and complete a review of lithium-ion battery firefighting methods.
