The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) brought a prosecution in the District Court against a drone operator for impeding an official investigation and operating a drone in breach of a lawful direction.
The case involved a Mr. Alan Brennan, who pleaded guilty to failing to cooperate with an IAA investigation by not attending a scheduled interview, not providing requested information, and subsequently flying a drone despite receiving a formal direction from the IAA not to do so.
The court directed Mr. Brennan to make a €400 charitable donation to the Little Flower Penny Dinners and to contribute €750 towards the IAA’s legal costs.
Commenting on the outcome, IAA Inspector, David Hansell, emphasised the importance of compliance in maintaining public safety:
“Aviation safety thrives on collaboration between operators, pilots, and the IAA. When we work together, we advance safety in our industry. When directions are ignored, that progress can be stalled. Choosing to cooperate ensures that the Irish drone community remains one of the safest and most forward-leaning in the world, moving together safely.”
The IAA urges all drone users to familiarise themselves with the rules that apply before taking to the skies.
